The vibrant city of Decatur is gearing up for its annual extravaganza, the Carnegie Carnival. Celebrating its thirteenth year, this Mardi Gras-style festivity promises a day filled with parades, live music, delectable street eats, and a kaleidoscope of community spirit—all in the name of supporting the arts.
At the heart of the Carnegie Carnival lies the spirited pursuit of royal titles, with community members passionately raising funds to be crowned King, Queen, Prince, Princess, Sir Bow Wow, or Lady Barks A Lot. Last year's King XII, Juan Penuelas, and his dedicated supporters, Joe Cain's Merry Widows, left an indelible mark with their commitment to the Carnegie Visual Arts Center. Similarly, Queen XII, Melissa Parker, and her team, Bacchus by the River, showcased exceptional dedication. As the city anticipates the upcoming carnival on February 10th, a new roster of candidates is poised to take the throne, promising a spectacular reveal at the end of the Carnegie Carnival Parade.
In 2012, the Carnegie Visual Arts Center introduced the community to the inaugural "Carnegie Carnival," a Mardi Gras-style celebration created by charter members. This festive season, spanning from October's Carnival Petition to February's Gospel Brunch, reaches its climax with the Carnegie Carnival parades on the Saturday before Fat Tuesday. Over the years, the celebration has expanded, now including events like Decatur's only half marathon, the Carnival Frolic, and a nighttime parade that rivals those held for centuries elsewhere. Beyond its joyous atmosphere, the Carnegie Carnival serves as a vital fundraiser, supporting the Carnegie Visual Arts Center and contributing to the thriving arts and culture scene in Decatur and surrounding areas.
